My first exposure to podcasts was fiction-based podcasts rather than non-fiction podcasts, such as Welcome to Night Vale, The Magnus Archives, The Silt Verse, and The Penumbra Podcast. So based on this I first thought to do something fiction-based as that’s what I first thought of. Most of these have some level of mystery/horror and cryptids, and especially Mothman, are popular figures in folklore.
For my podcast both my character and my guest’s character are fictional. I invented a world in which this character, Asa Morris, host of Monster Hunt, is a hesitant cryptic journalist who interviews people who say they’ve encountered monsters and cryptids throughout the country. This week Rebecca Russman, a Payson Denny’s dishwasher and self-declared Mothman expert, shall be interviewed with an expedition into the field to find Mothman’s dwelling.
I created almost all of the sounds in the podcast except for the Mothman sounds and the music. Mothman was created by distorting and echoing an angry guinea pig and added fly buzzing. But other than that everything else is sounds I created and recorded. I marched around in a pool with hiking clothes and boots, rolled around in fire ants to get falling noises, went to Payson to record forest noises, and also through myself into the ground many times for audio clips that didn’t really use in the end product-also conveniently forgot I was allergic to the grass I was throwing myself into until it was too late, but that’s art.
